Day in and day out, we get so many requests on how and where to find halal food in japan. These questions are, especially raised by Muslim visitors whoa re either visiting the countries or have plans to visit for business, family, recreation or any other purposes. Instead of answering our visitors individually, we have decided to write a post on this issue. I hope it will be helpful for our readers at least in some way.
There is no doubt that Japan still has a lot to do in terms of the availability of halal food in all parts of the country. However, the Japanese government as well as the private sector has been hard to address this issue. As a result of these efforts, you could find halal food stores in all the major cities of the countries plus quite a few ethnic and some Japanese restaurants which serve halal food or at least the food which can be consumed by an observant Muslim without a serious reservation.
However, despite all the strenuous efforts by all the stakeholders, we fully realise that the problem can not be solved overnightly. We have the following suggestions for our valuable readers to help solve this problem at least partially.
- Local Halal Restaurants. Before you head to any city or area area of Japan, please try to prepare a list of all the restaurants available in the area in question, call them or at least send them an email message whether they still serve halal food and for what price. We have been updating the list of halal restaurants in Japan for quite some time now. Inshallah, we will try to keep it updated in the future as well. You may find the list here.
- Local Mosques. You should have the contact numbers and the address details of all the local Masajid in the area you are planning to visit. If you call them, they may be able to guide you about halal restaurants in that area. These are the people who have thorough knowledge of how and where to eat halal in their area or city. The list of Masajid is on this page.
- Halal Food Stores. If the above-mentioned sources are not helpful, you may try to find a nearby halal food stores where you could find various halal food items directly imported from various parts of the Muslim world. The problem with these halal food stores is that the food items which they sell in raw form which you can not consume without cooking it in one way or the other. You could find the list here (We are still updating the list and Inshallah hope to do soon).
- Halal Friendly Hotels. Although the number of halal friendly hotels in Japan is still quite limited, there are some hotels which have been making efforts to satisfy their Muslim visitors at least in terms of halal food. You may find some limited information on the topic on this website.
If all else fails, please visit a nearby restaurant and ask them whether they can serve you a purely vegeterian dish or any type of fish which is not prepared by using animal oils. If they say they could cook your food by using salad oil and there will be no animal meat in that food, you may go for it.
